A wonderful 15 jewel manual wind mechanical watch that shows Red Guards Banner on the front case. The engraving actually shows a Red Star in the centre above the letters CCCP with a Red Banner saying 'Gvardia' in Russian Cyrillic meaning 'Guards'. Around the outside of the Banner is a Victory Laurel Leaf and Sunshine Rays behind symbolising hope. In the rear of the case is a star with hammer & sickle centre piece with the words again in Russian Cyrillic saying 'Velikaya Otechestvennaya 1941-1945' which translated means 'Great Patriotic War 1941-1945'. This commemorates the Second World War for the Soviet Union. The face of the watch is a typical Molnija engrave ornate style with seperate second dial and Roman Numerals around the edge.

The Red Guards were armed factory workers. They first appeared during the 1905 Revolution and they reformed in March 1917 in order to defend the government that replaced the overthrow of Nicholas II. Under the influence of the Bolsheviks the Red Guards played an important role in the defeat of the revolt led by General Lavr Kornilov in September, 1917. They also were used to seize control from the Provisional Government in November, 1917. It is estimated that by the end of the revolution there were 7,000 Red Guards in Russia.
