Molnija Pocket Watch - Gold Domed Moscow

A wonderful 15 jewel manual wind mechanical watch that shows the St Basils Cathedral in Red Square on one side and the Emblem of Russia on the other. Around the picture of the cathedral it says in Russian 'Moskva Zlato Glavya' meaning Golden Domed Moscow which refers to the many hundreds of Golden Church Domes that adourne the city .

St. Basil's Cathedral was built in the mid-16th century by decree of Ivan the Terrible in honour of the capture of the Kazan Khanate, part of the former Golden Horde. The cathedral was built between 1555 and 1561 by the architects Barma and Postnik Yakoviev. There is a story to the effect that after seeing the cathedral for the first time, Ivan The Terrible had the men blinded so that they could never build anything to surpass the wonder of this new building. The small church of Saint Basil, which was built later on the grave of a God's fool much respected in Moscow, gave the whole cathedral its second, more widely known name of St. Basil's Cathedral

The double-headed eagle has regained its status as the centrepiece of Russia's state seal, testifying to the continuity of Russian history. The Modern State Seal of the Russian Federation is a rectangular red heraldic shield. At the bottom, it has rounded corners and a pointed middle. The shield is adorned with a golden double-headed eagle spreading its wings upward. The eagle is crowned with two small crowns and, above them, a large crown, all three joined together by a ribbon. The face of the watch is a typical Molnija engrave ornate style with seperate second dial and Roman Numerals around the edge.
